Stanton, Wadeck Win All-Star Game Charity 5K

The second edition, part of the All-Star Game festivities in Anaheim, had more than 7,200 finishers; $200,000 raised for four cancer charities

ANAHEIM, Calif. - (July 11, 2010) - At the 2nd All-Star Game Charity 5K on Sunday morning, Conor Stanton, 18, of nearby Fullerton and Vivien Wadeck, 31, from North Hollywood were the winners in 15 minutes, 48 seconds and 17:50 respectively. Stanton battled two other teenagers - Mohammad Charara and Edgar Cobian - who were right behind him in 15:50 and 15:53, while Wadeck had 39 seconds over runner-up Erin Griffith.

In the Masters races (40 and over), Brea residents Kevin Broady (48) and Edith Martinez (42) crossed the finish line first in 16:13 and 19:53. Broady was also fifth overall.

The event - presented by Sports Authority and Nike and hosted by MLB Network's Harold Reynolds - featured appearances by Hall of Famers Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson and Paul Molitor, former Angels Bobby Grich and Tim Salmon, Jillian Michaels, star of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and "Losing It With Jillian", and award-winning actress Gabrielle Union.

The 3.1 mile race started outside of Angel Stadium of Anaheim, home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and host of the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, and traveled through the surrounding neighborhood. Just before the 3 mile mark, the participants went inside Angel Stadium with a loop around the perimeter of the field, giving fans an exclusive glimpse of the Big A before the 2010 All-Star Game, with the finish just outside the stadium.

The 5K race had 7,206 finishers, making the second edition one of the largest timed 5Ks in the country according to Running USA. There was also a 1 Mile Fun Run and total event attendance was more than 9,200. Each participant received a commemorative All-Star medal and t-shirt.

All net-proceeds from the event - $200,000 - went to four charities supporting cancer research and education - Prostate Cancer Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and City of Hope.
