California Youth Top Performances at 2010 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships
Day 1: July 27
Intermediate Boys 2,000m steeplechase: Pleasanton Heat's Parker Deuel (Alamo, Calif.) with 200 meters to go dueled back and forth with Dillon Worley (Northwest Flyers, Klein, Texas) getting the win in 6:12.87 to Deuel's 6:14.23.
Young Men's 2,000m steeplechase: Joshua MacDonald (Castro Valley TC, San Leandro, Calif.), the 2008 Junior Olympic runner up in the Intermediate Boys steeplechase, won in 6:03.25.
Midget Girls 1,500m race walk: Caitlin Palacio (LSI Sprint, San Jose, Calif.) returned to defend her title in the Midget Girls 1,500m race walk (7:35.02) and better her previous year's performance by nearly 30 seconds!
Day 2: July 28
Bantam Boys Triathlon: 2010 Youth Outdoor champion Jaiden Woodbey (Speed City TC) won the with an impressive 1,002 points, the first Bantam athlete to score more than 1,000 points at the National Junior Olympic Championships since Rashad Rainey-Cox set the meet and National record (1,032) in 2002.
Youth Boys 4 x 800 Meter Relay team from the Titans Track Club (Marietta, Ga.) held on to win in 8:44.55 over Speed City's 8:46.58.
Youth Girls' 4x800m relay: Barely missing the Junior Olympic record in the the 3M Track Club (Oakland, Calif.) won their event in 9:22.43.
Day 3: July 29
Midget Boys Javelin: Otis Statum (3M TC) improved on his 5th place finish at the 2009 Junior Olympic Championships, crushing the Junior Olympic Championships meet record in the Midget Boys javelin throw with a winning toss of 53.30m/ 174-10. He broke the record (51.98m/170-6) on his first throw with a distance of 52.07m/170-10, but improved that mark on his fifth throw to finish 1.32m/4-4 farther than the record. Statum's teammate Bryan Morris also had a meet-record throw, finishing in second with a mark of 52.82m/173-3.
Young Women's Shot Put: Kayla Kovar (Ridgecrest, Ca.) out-tossed runner-up Meagan McKee (San Jose, Calif.) by one-half inch to win the (13.58m/44-06.75).
Day 4: July 30
Highlights: no PA Youth featured.
Day 5: July 31
Youth Girls 3,000m: Christine Bayliss (Roseville Express, Roseville, Calif.) crossed the line in 10:03.60 to repeat her 2009 Midget Girls 3,000m victory.
Midget Girls 800m: Nicole Warwick (Central Valley Roadrunners, Modesto, Calif.) took a lead on the final turn of the Midget Girls 800m before Sydney Gandy (Track Houston, Houston, Texas) began battling back with 25 meters to go. With just enough time to cross the finish line, Warwick got a second wind and pulled ahead to win in 2:19.17.
Midget Girls 4x100m relays: Quiet Fire TC (Hawthorne, Calif.) led down the backstretch until 3M TC (Oakland, Calif.) overtook them in the last 10 meters for the win in 50.39.
