Preview: 2008 adidas Track Classic
Updated May 4, 2008
From press releases.

Campbell-Brown, Clement, Hayes added to adidas Track Classic

CARSON, Calif. (May 1, 2008) - Sprint sensation Veronica Campbell-Brown and hurdler Kerron Clement have joined the parade of World Champions slated to compete in the adidas Track Classic on May 18, organizers announced today. They join Tyson Gay, Jeremy Wariner, Allyson Felix, Bernard Lagat and Jana Rawlinson, bringing the total of reigning World Champions set for the event so far to seven. All expect to vie for gold medals at the Olympics later this summer.

Joining them is Joanna Hayes, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the 100-meter hurdles. Hayes, who competed for John W. North High School in Riverside and then UCLA, broke the Olympic Record in her victory in Athens.

Rising star Xavier Carter, the 2006 NCAA outdoor 100-meter, 400-meter, 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter champion, has also been added to the lineup. He is the third-fastest 200-meter runner in history, thanks to a personal best set in 2006 of 19.63 seconds.

The adidas Track Classic will begin at 12:30 p.m. on May 18 at The Home Depot Center, on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills, and will be broadcast live on ESPN from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. PDT (4 p.m.-6 p.m. EDT).

Campbell-Brown, of Jamaica, enters this Olympic season as one of the most successful and consistent female sprinters in the world. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 200 meters, Campbell-Brown's three medals made her the winningest female track athlete in Athens. Last summer at the World Championships, she tallied three more medals, including gold at 100 meters. Also earning gold in Osaka was Clement, in the 400-meter hurdles. A two-time US Outdoor Champion and two-time NCAA Champion, he is also the World Record-holder for 400 meters indoors.

Produced by Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., the adidas Track Classic is the second stop of USA Track & Field's Visa Championship Series. Tickets, from $40 (finish line) down to $10, are now available by calling Ticketmaster at 213-480-3232 or visiting www.Ticketmaster.com. For group sales, call 1-877-AEG-TICKETS. Lagat, Stuczynski among stars set for adidas Track Classic
April 17, 2008

CARSON, Calif. (April 17, 2008) - Two more reigning World Champions - Bernard Lagat and Jana Rawlinson - and World Indoor Championships silver medalist Jenn Stuczynski have been added to the lineup for the adidas Track Classic on May 18, organizers announced today.

EDT).

Lagat, already a two-time Olympic medalist, last year became the first man in history to win the 1500-meter/5000-meter double at the World Championships. Also the American Record-holder at the distance, Lagat is the first American in history to win a World Championship medal at 5000 meters and the first to win an Olympic or World medal at 1500 meters since 1908. He will compete at 1500 meters here.

Last year at the adidas Track Classic, Stuczynski thrilled the crowd when she broke Stacy Dragila's American Record in the pole vault. Since then, the two-time US outdoor champion has become the first American woman to jump 16 feet, tied for #2 all-time in the world, and jumped the same height as Yelena Isinbayeva to win a silver medal at the 2008 World Indoor Championships.

An Australian, Rawlinson (formerly Pittman) won World Championships gold in the 400-meter hurdles just eight months after giving birth to her first child. She also won the title in 2003, and is a four-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist at the hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay.

The three join Tyson Gay, Jeremy Wariner and Allyson Felix, who were previously announced.

Produced by Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., the adidas Track Classic is the second stop of USA Track & Field's Visa Championship Series. Gay, who won gold at 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4x100-meter relay in Osaka, was named 2007 male IAAF Athlete of the Year in track and field by the sport's international governing body. Among his many other honors last year, Gay was ranked #1 in the world at 100 and 200 meters by Track & Field News magazine, which also named him Man of the Year.

Felix also won three gold medals at the World Championships, at 200 meters and both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. In defending her 200-meter title, the Los Angeles native ran 21.81 seconds, the fastest time in the world by any woman in the last eight years. A 2004 Olympic silver medalist, the 22-year-old finished the year ranked not only #1 in the world at 200 meters, but #3 at 400 meters and #6 at 100 meters. For their efforts, Felix and Gay were named the 2007 Jesse Owens Award winners as the top track-and-field athletes in the United States.
